Choosing a Wedding Rice Substitute

By: Lisa Bower

If you've been to a wedding or seen one in the media, you know that throwing rice is a tradition to bless the newly married couple with the luck of a child or two. However, nowadays, many people believe the tradition to be not only archaic but also a painful process, as rice can sting when it hits skin. Additionally, rice is banned from many venues, as it can create quite a mess, as well as hurt local animals. Still, there's a way to take this old tradition and make it modern. If you're looking to make a grand exit with your partner, get creative and think outside the box when crafting a list of wedding rice substitutes.

One alternative to rice is confetti, as the swirling colored pieces of paper can make a beautiful and magical entrance for the couple. Be aware, however, that it's difficult to get off of clothes or to clean up. Birdseed is another kind of wedding rice substitute. Not only is it a bit softer than rice, but it's definitely safe for the environment. Local birds will even be appreciative, as they will get a free meal from your exit.

Consider having flowers thrown while you and your partner make your exit. This will not only smell great and look lovely, but it's much easier to clean up than rice and confetti. The one major downfall to rose petals is that they can be pricey, but consider a quick and easy recycling idea: use some of the flowers from the wedding decorations.

Consider using butterflies or even arrange for doves. This is a creative way to exit, and has no mess involved. If you are using animals, however, be prepared to pay a pretty penny for the animals and their handlers; you also can't predict that the animals will follow your desired flight route.

Many couples now choose to make their exit through a cloud of bubbles. This is a fun and inexpensive way for loved ones to send you and your mate off. Additionally, using bubbles ensures there won't be a mess to clean up after the event. Similarly, using sparklers is another great way to add fanfare to your exit. The best part of using such substitutes is that guests will have a hoot using them.
