Drills for Baseball Pitches

Baseball pitches are a big part of what makes baseball so exciting. Waiting in anticipation as pitchers get ready to throw the ball; watching to see if it will be a perfect pitch or a ball. A good pitcher can make a baseball game a lot of fun to watch. If you’re a baseball pitcher and you’d like to throw a perfect pitch like some of baseball’s greats, there are some drills you can practice.

The one knee drill is popular among pitchers. It involves pitching from a kneeling position. The stationary position of the lower body allows the pitcher to focus on what his arm is doing. A variation of this drill is to place a bucket underneath the foot of the bent leg.

To develop the speed at which a pitcher throws the ball, try having the pitcher hold a baseball in each hand and rotate both arms. Have him focus on the speed at which he rotates. As he grows comfortable rotating with one arm, try it with two and then three balls in each hand.

To increase the speed at which the pitcher uses his hands, try having him stand with his feet shoulder-width apart in the stance he would normally be, his toes facing home plate. When the pitcher throws the ball, have him pivot on his back foot without lifting either foot. It is important for the pitcher to follow through on the pitch, bringing his elbow to the opposite knee.

Another baseball pitching drill that you can do is to have the pitcher go through his wind-up without a baseball. Before he would normally throw the ball, as he’s balancing, hand him the baseball to throw. Have him wait for a few seconds before handing him the ball, allowing him to focus on his balance rather than his speed. Then have him throw the ball.

These are some of the baseball pitches drills that you can do to pitch faster and more accurately, but they are far from all that can be done. Patience, practice and an attention to your body and form can help you to become a better baseball pitcher.
