How to Throw Baseball Pitches
Do want to learn how to throw baseball pitches? The key to pitching well is to master the proper form. The better form you have, the more accurate, fast and powerful pitch you’ll deliver. Follow these steps for picture-perfect baseball pitching form.
Get Set
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. You should be on the pitcher’s mound, facing the catcher, with the heels of both feet on the pitching rubber and the toes of your feet pointing towards the catcher. Pull your glove into your chest and rest your elbows at your sides.
Note Your Grip
Make sure you’ve gripped the ball in the position appropriate for the type of pitch desired.
Shift Left
Move your left foot to the left and shift your weight onto your left foot. Pivot your right foot such that it is next to and up against the pitching rubber.
Knee Lift
Lift your left knee and pivot such that your body faces third base.
One-Two Move
You’ll need to perform the following two motions simultaneously:
Bring both arms down, creating a semi-circle as you search for your sweet spot–the spot where your throwing arm is at its lowest point, somewhat perpendicular to the ground, your elbow slightly bent. You should be facing third base until you find your sweet spot.
Simultaneously you’ll need to bend your right leg and lower your left leg towards the ground, then stride outwards as you raise your throwing arm from the sweet spot.
Place Your Front Foot On the Ground
Step into the pitch, placing your front foot at an angle such that you have maximum power. This is usually at a closed angle, or angle less than 90 degree angle in relation to the plate.
Push Off With Your Back Foot
Push off with the back foot and pivot the front foot to a 90 degree angle.
Swing Open
Open your upper body, allowing the motion to propel your throwing arm as you extend your pitching arm forward.
Let Go
Let the ball fly from your hand without snapping your wrist. It should feel like the ball is leading your wrist, not the other way around. Let the power of the motion of your whole body move the ball.
Follow Through
Make sure you lift your back foot off the ground and follow through with your arm and body. Return to a fielding position when done.
