How to Throw Pitches
Here is a list of pitches along with a description on how to grip the baseball.
Strike One: The Fastballs
There are two kinds of fastballs: the four seam fast ball and the two seam fastball. The four seam is the faster of the two and is considered a straight fast pitch. When throwing a four seamer place the index and middle finger over the seams that are widest on the ball that resembles a horse shoe. Next place your thumb directly underneath the ball. Hold it gently, with a soft grip so the ball rests in the fingers away from the palm. The tighter the grip, the more friction. You want as less friction as possible. Holding it lighter means the ball will leave your hand quicker. The quicker it leaves your hand the faster the ball will go.
The two seamer is more of a movement pitch. Place your index and middle finger directly on the narrow seams of the ball. Then place your thumb underneath the ball in the smooth part in between the narrow seams. Grip the ball tighter and hold it closer to the palm of your hand. The firmer the grip causes more friction that makes the ball to move. It's a great pitch to go inside with as the ball will drift into the throwing side of the plate.
A slider is a form of a fastball and can be a devastating pitch if done correctly. The slider is gripped like a two seam fast ball but held more to the outer third of the baseball. The key to a slider is to throw it from the thumb side of the index finger. This helps for maximum spin which is the key to the slider. Cocking the wrist in a not so tightly manner will help you throw it from the thumb side as well.
Strike Two: The Curve
First, start by placing the middle finger along the seam at the bottom and your thumb on the back seam. Then rest the index finger next to the middle finger. When the ball is thrown, remember, it has more of a top spin rotation to it rather than the under spin of a fast ball. Make sure when the ball is released that the thumb rotates up while the index and middle finger rotate down. This will cause the ball to spin in the desired manner.
Strike Three: The Change-up
There are a couple of ways to throw the change-up. One way is the three finger grip. The index, middle and ring finger are held across the seams at the top of the ball while the thumb and pinky fingers are placed in the smooth leather part at the bottom. Hold the ball deep in the palm of your hand to cause a good amount of friction. Throw the pitch as if you were throwing a fast ball.
The circle change-up is another way to throw a slow pitch. It's quite easy. First, make the “okay” gesture. You know the one where the thumb and index finger form a circle with the other three fingers in the air. Place the ball deep in your palm so the three fingers rest over the ball. The circle, or thumb and index finger should be on the side of the ball. Use your fast ball mechanics when throwing this pitch. Also, the thumb should remain down through the release, kind of like giving someone a thumbs down gesture.
