How to Become a Better Basketball Player

The simplest way to become a better basketball player is practice. Play as much as much as humanly possible without it interfering with your personal or work schedules. Seems almost impossible, especially if you have a life. The good thing though, like reading, basketball is fundamental. Improving your shooting, passing, defense, dribbling, foot work and cardiovascular system will definitely help you become a better basketball player.

Shooting Skills

There are many drill that can be done to improve your shooting touch. The best one is a little game called “around the world.” It is a simple game you probably played as a kid. The object of this exercise is to shoot the ball from different areas on the floor. Anywhere. Close to the basket or outside the three point arch. The main goal here is consistency. Being able to hit ten in a row should be your goal.

Passing Skills

If your the point guard type then you'll want to perfect your passing skills. Magic Johnson was the best when it came to passing and setting up his teammates. Practice passing with a friend or teammate. Repetitions of chest passes and bounce passes should be done. Make sure each pass is to your partner the same way each time. Again, repetition is important to improving this skill.

Defense

When working on defense always remember to play defense with your feet. The quicker your feet the better you'll be able to stay in front of whomever you're guarding. Practice side to side shuffling drills. The main goal is to have quick feet. The more you're in the proper guarding position the greater the odds for disrupting play.

Dribbling

A great drill to practice the dribble is to simultaneously bounce two balls. One with your left hand and one with your right. Work it so both hands seem natural.

Foot Work

Having quick feet is essential to good defense. Proper balance is important in executing proper jump shots. Maintaining the pivot is key when posting up, when your back is to the basket. The foot that stays on the floor when you turn is the pivot foot. Remember, you can only move one foot or you'll be called for a travel.

Staying in Tip Top Shape

Since there is a lot of running in basketball, building up of the cardiovascular system is wise. Sprints, long distance running and weight training should be routine as brushing your teeth.
