Archery How To

By: Maeve Rich

Here are some archery tips to make your next time at the archery range a little easier.

Your stance is an important part of accurately shooting an arrow. When you're getting ready to shoot, stand at the shooting line with the shoulder opposite your primary hand facing the target. Keep your feet open, facing the target.

To actually shoot the bow and arrow, hook the bow string in the archer's groove. When you nock the arrow, make sure that the arrow nock groove is situated squarely on the string. Make sure the bow's grip is centered in the hand that will be shooting the bow. Then raise your arm holding the bow up to eye level. Pull the string back to the side of your face, keeping your arm back and then down. Your hand should be touching your face. Load the arrow, align the string and aim.

To hold the bow properly, place your first three fingers in a hook shape above the first joint The nock point should be between your first and second finger.

The archery release is probably the most looked forward to moment in archery but it's important that you execute the release properly. Moving your drawing arm back, release the string. Your entire hand should be involved in the archery release to keep the arrow from quivering and going off course. Make sure you follow through, continuing moving your hand backwards until the arrow hits its target.
