Bring backpacking gear any time you go into the woods. Whether you're planning on backpacking just for the day or for several days, your basic backpacking gear will be pretty much the same.
Tent
You'll need shelter from the elements. You may opt to bring a pup tent, which is a small tent meant to sleep just one to two people. Larger tents are also popular, and can accommodate up to ten people. Bring a couple of tarps with you, especially if your tent isn't waterproofed. A tarp may be laid over your tent to keep rain out or laid on the floor of your tent to keep you dry.
Clothing
What you wear is important. Your clothes act as a shield from the sun, rain and wind. They can keep you cool if it's hot or warm if it's cold. Dress in layers so that you're prepared for any type of weather.
Don't forget about footwear. Make sure you're wearing hiking boots. Regular sneakers won't protect your ankles from thorny brush and also won't provide ankle support when you're hiking over uneven terrain.
Food and Water
Bring plenty of non-perishable food items which you don't need to heat to eat. Perishable items should be limited and properly stored. Pack more water than you think in case your trip gets unexpectedly longer (that is to say, you get lost).
Map and Compass
A map of the area you'll be backpacking can be helpful, as can a compass. It's easy to get lost in the woods, with so much of the surroundings looking the same. Bringing a map and compass (and knowing how to use them) can help you in the event that you get lost.
Extra Backpacking Gear
There are some extras you should toss in your bag just in case. These include sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, a first-aid kit, a pocketknife, a flashlight (and extra batteries). Lightweight backpacking gear is essential.
Backpacking Poles
These are not used by everyone, though they can be helpful. Backpacking poles can help you get down a steep hill easily or maneuver over rocky or otherwise uneven or slippery terrain.
Fire Starter
Make sure you have matches and a fire starter with you. You may need to cook food or keep warm.
Backpack
Of course you'll need something to put all of this backpacking gear into. Look for a backpack that meets your needs. If you'll be going on a multi-day backpacking trip, you'll need a larger pack. Make sure the shoulder straps are padded to keep you comfortable. A waist belt can help distribute the weight more evenly over your back, taking some of the strain off of your shoulders.
What you need when backpacking boils down to a surprisingly short list. You'll be surprised by how comfortable you'll be with just the following four items. |
