Choosing the Right Hiking Backpack

By: Rebecca Mikulin

The right hiking backpack can make or break a long hike. Whether it's a day trip through suburban woods or a week-long trek through the wilderness, the backpack that's best-suited for the job is an essential piece of equipment. Most people who frequently hike or spend extended periods of time outdoors, end up with several different hiking backpacks in order to have the right pack for the right trip. Thankfully, there are only a few things to keep in mind when choosing the right hiking backpack.

Materials

Not only does a good hiking backpack have to be durable, it's usually a good idea for it to be waterproof too. Unless you know for a fact that you won't come into contact with water or snow throughout your hikes, or that you won't be carrying anything that can't get wet, you should opt for waterproofing -- if nothing else, even small amounts of water can add tremendous weight to your shoulders, back and hips on a long hike.

The right size for the job

Keep in mind what you'll be using your hiking backpack for and, if possible, bring the equipment that you intend to carry. While most backpacks are easy to hang things from, this is not recommended. A backpack is designed to evenly distribute the weight from inside the pack over your torso, not the weight from the sides. In addition, anything that cannot fit in the pack may shift while you walk, increasing the risk of injury. That said, you also want to avoid purchasing a significantly oversized pack, because then you will be carrying a lot of useless weight, and your equipment will move during the trip.

Proper fit

Choosing the right hiking backpack for you means, first and foremost, that it is the one with which you're the most comfortable. Don't be afraid to try the backpack on while you're in the store, fully adjusting all of the straps and supports to fit you. If possible, load it up with your equipment and wear the backpack while you do your other shopping. You may feel a bit silly, but this is the best way to make sure that the pack stays comfortable.
