Get Geared Up: Essential Hiking Clothing

By: Maeve Rich

Hiking clothing is an essential part of hiking equipment that can either make or break your day. Dress in inappropriate clothing and you could end up cold, hot, or eaten alive by bugs. When preparing for a hike, always dress in layers and follow some of the following tips about hiking clothing.

Wear a tee shirt with a long sleeve shirt over it. If possible, both shirts should be moisture-wicking to keep sweat or rain from accumulating on your skin and making you cold and wet. If you don't have moisture-wicking material, just wear what you have.

Depending on the weather, wear shorts or pants. If it's particularly buggy in your area, make sure you wear long pants. Avoid denim, which can get heavy when wet and takes a long time to dry.

Many hikers, especially novice hikers, make the mistake of wearing sneakers on the trail. While comfortable, they don't offer the ankle support necessary for a hike. It's all too easy to turn an ankle on a slippery rock, and an injured ankle can make getting back to your starting point nearly impossible.

Wear thick socks to go with your hiking boots, even in warmer temperatures. Thick socks will help you avoid blisters as well as protect your lower legs from scratches by underbrush. You can also carry mole skin with you in the event of a blister. Mole skin is a soft piece of material that will protect and comfort a blister.

You should always have a rain jacket with you, in the event of a storm. A windbreaker (or a jacket that does double-duty) is also good to have on hand in case the temperatures drop or the wind picks up.

Sunglasses or a hat (or both) are also good to bring with you. You want to be able to appreciate nature, not squint to try to see it.

On top of wearing all of this, bring some extra clothing with you. This is especially important if it is going to rain or if you will be hiking overnight.

Follow these hiking tips for comfort and safety to make each of your trips as pleasurable as possible. Hiking is a favorite pastime for many people. It combines nature with exercise and provides tranquility and a break from the rigors of everyday life.

Day hiking does not require nearly as much equipment as overnight hiking or camping, yet you still need to be prepared. Unexpected situations can arise at any time, so having the necessary equipment for everything from a little rain to getting lost can save you time and trouble. Pack carefully for a day hike but make sure that your pack doesn't get too heavy. You'd hate to get to the top of a mountain only to dread the return journey due to a heavy pack.
