Camping needs vary depending on situations, but there are some basic things you need to keep in mind whenever you're outdoor camping. Having the right essentials, from camping cookware to emergency equipment, can make your camping trip not only comfortable, but safer as well. Here are some tips on some basic camping needs.
The gear that you will need for your camping trip may be extensive. No matter what type of camping you're doing, you will need a backpack. The size of this backpack can vary depending on the type of trip, but you'll want to make sure that whatever backpack you do choose to bring can hold all of your equipment. Having your hands free, especially when doing hiking, is essential. Look for a lightweight backpack. Although these generally cost a little bit more than a standard backpack, your back will thank you and you will have a much more enjoyable time hiking to your campsite.
You'll also need a tent. Again, the size of the tent will vary depending on how many people you need it to sleep. A pup tent is small and will sleep just one or two people. Some companies make enormous tents, mulit-room even, which can sleep eight or more people. It's a good idea to make sure that your tent is waterproofed and even then you should bring along a tarp to lay over your tent to keep rain out. Another tarp can be laid on the bottom of the tent to keep your belongings (as well as your sleeping bag) dry. A sleeping bag is a necessity. Make sure that it is able to withstand whatever temperatures you could encounter.
You'll need to bring along clothes. Make sure that your clothes are not cotton, which doesn't dry well when it gets wet. Pack plenty of thick, non-cotton socks. Bring enough warm clothes that you will be all set in the event of an emergency.
Of course you'll want to bring plenty of food and water. Make sure that you always have an extra day's worth of food, and that that food does not need to be cooked, just in case you run into trouble. Water should be plentiful, or you should have a water purifier with you.
Other basic camping needs that you do not want to be without are a map, compass, matches, fire starter and an emergency first aid kit. Other things which are good to have with you are a flashlight and extra batteries, a pocketknife, sunglasses and sunscreen. If you have a cell phone, bring it, even if you leave it off. If you have an emergency and are able to get cell phone reception, it could literally save your life.
Don't get bored in the great outdoors. With many things to do while camping, you can have a jam-packed nature-filled vacation.
Kids' activities while camping make a dull trip into an adventure.
