Steelhead Fishing Secrets

By: LuAnn Schindler

Steelhead fishing means finding the mysterious underwater creature. Understanding the nature of the steelhead, or rainbow trouth, will help anglers find the cunning silver fish.

The Right Attire
Steelhead fishing means you'll be spending time in the water. And since the water is chilly, you may opt to wear hip waders or even chest waders. Quality neoprene waders will deter the chill from setting in.

The Right Rod
Having the right type of fishing rod is important for steelhead fishing. Take along a pole that's at least nine feet long. Try a seven to nine pound line when steelhead fishing. Sometimes, a two-handed rod works best, especially for larger steelheads. These rods vary between 12 and 15 feet. Use a sinking line, unless nymphing. Then, try a floating line.

The Right Fly
Steelhead like salmon streamers. Egg patterns and nymphs also catch a steelhead's attention. Before steelhead fishing, check with a local bait shop to see what's working with today's water conditions.

The Right Spot
Fish upstream. When steelhead can access fresh water, the fish head upstream toward spawning grounds. A good rule of steelhead fishing is to follow the fish by starting near the river mouth, work upstream toward spawning areas, and then move downstream. If you wouldn't happen to snag a steelhead, try another area. Steelhead tend to stay in a pool, so if you haven't had a bite after a few casts, move upstream a bit.

The Right Catch and Release
Steelhead tend to return to the ocean following spawning. It's best to catch and release when steelhead fishing so they can continue the spawning cycle.

Spending time searching for steelhead is fun. Learning the steelhead's nature will help land more fish while steelhead fishing.
