Day hiking does not require nearly as much equipment as overnight hiking or camping, yet you still need to be prepared. Unexpected situations can arise at any time, so having the necessary equipment for everything from a little rain to getting lost can save you time and trouble. Pack carefully for a day hike but make sure that your pack doesn't get too heavy. You'd hate to get to the top of a mountain only to dread the return journey due to a heavy pack.
On a hike of any length, it's important to have navigation equipment. This includes, at a minimum, a map and a compass (which you should be able to use). Recently hikers have started bringing GPS devices as well, but you should still have a map with you and know how to read it.
Water is also vital on hikes. It's easy to get dehydrated, and dehydration can seriously compromise your health as well as your ability to complete a hike. Even if you're just day hiking, extra food is also a good idea, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area you'll be in or you'll be gone for the entire day. A good rule of thumb is to pack one more meal than you believe you'll need. Try to avoid sugar and caffeine, which can dehydrate you.
Bring extra clothes and rain protection should a storm strike. A plastic bag can be used to protect you from the rain as well as store wet clothes in. Sunscreen should also be in your day hiking pack to protect your skin from a sunburn. Bug spray will save you from being attacked by mosquitoes and other bugs.
Although you may be intending to do a day hike, getting lost is always a possibility. For this reason carry a flashlight as well as something to start a fire with. Not only will a fire keep you warm on a cold night, but the flames can attract help to your area.
Remember to be prepared for both the expected and unexpected when day hiking. Make sure you have the essentials every time you head out, even if you aren't planning on being gone for long. You never know what could happen on a hike.
