Day hiking does not require nearly as much equipment as overnight hiking or camping, yet you still need to be prepared. Unexpected situations can arise at any time, so having the necessary equipment for everything from a little rain to getting lost can save you time and trouble. Today's technology allows hikers to navigate hiking trails with a GPS. While useful, this can provide a false sense of security, as hikers may rely on a device that could fail due to various reasons (being broken, running out of power). Other hikers choose not to use this technology for reasons ranging from cost to wanting to stay true to nature.
