What You Need for Day Hiking

By: Maeve Rich

What you need for day hiking is different from what you would need for an overnight hike or camping trip. You'll need less hiking apparel than you would for a longer trip but the hiking clothes you do bring will have to be able to double-duty.

The Mountaineers, a Seattle-based group, came up with a list in the 1930s of things that a hiker should carry. This list includes a map, compass, flashlight, first-aid kit, a fire-starter, repair kit and tools, among the following things.

You should dress in layers when you hike. Even if the weather seems hot, make sure that you bring something which will keep you warm in the event that the temperature drops. You should also bring something to keep yourself dry in case it rains. Try to avoid cotton, which doesn't dry well.

Footwear is important, even if it's just a day hike. Running sneakers will be fine for a short hike on flat terrain, but they're not sufficient for a longer, more difficult hike. Try to find a pair of hiking boots that provide ankle support.

You'll need protection from the sun. Sunscreen is a good idea as is a hat and sunglasses. Make sure you have bug spray to combat the bugs.

Even if you're going for just the day, you need to bring food with you. You should have food in case you get hungry as well as food in case you get lost and have to unexpectedly extend your hike.

It's a good idea to bring a cell phone with you in the event of an emergency. Don't count on this as a lifeline though, as many cell phones don't get good or even any reception in the middle of the woods.

You'll need a pack to carry all of your hiking gear. Make sure that the pack is lightweight and rain-resistant.

Follow these hiking tips for comfort and safety to make each of your trips as pleasurable as possible. Hiking is a favorite pastime for many people. It combines nature with exercise and provides tranquility and a break from the rigors of everyday life.

Day hiking does not require nearly as much equipment as overnight hiking or camping, yet you still need to be prepared. Unexpected situations can arise at any time, so having the necessary equipment for everything from a little rain to getting lost can save you time and trouble. Pack carefully for a day hike but make sure that your pack doesn't get too heavy. You'd hate to get to the top of a mountain only to dread the return journey due to a heavy pack.
