Benefits of RV Camping

By: Dachary Carey

RV camping provides a lot of flexibility, without requiring you to give up all the amenities of home. Even if you're a veteran of the RV scene, there's a good chance that you're not getting everything you can from your recreational vehicle. Try these tips to make your next trip the best ever.

Check Your RV Manual
Are you getting the most out of your RV? If you haven't read the RV's manual, check it out. You might find that your RV has hidden features you didn't know about, and you can also avoid buying RV camping supplies that duplicate things your RV already does. Knowing how to service your RV can also prevent breakdowns and operational problems that leave you making repairs rather than enjoying your vacation.

RV Camping Accessories
RV camping isn't just about the vehicle; you need the right accessories to enhance your RV experience. Skipping the tent doesn't mean you won't need some traditional camping accessories. A quick list includes the following:

  • Folding chairs
  • Mosquito-repelling lanterns
  • Camp stove and cookware (you're not going to microwave everything, are you?)
  • Bicycles
  • Screen tent (some RVs have a built-in screen to keep mosquitoes and insects away)

RV Camping Supplies
Accessories are only half the battle; you also need RV camping supplies. You'll need staples for personal care and hygiene, such as suntan lotion, mosquito repellant, soap, shampoo and towels. You also need to consider how long your trip is going to be, and how much and what type of food you'll want to bring with you on your camping trip. Focus on nonperishable foods that don't need to be refrigerated and that can survive some bouncing around while you're on the road.

You can probably always pick up things you've forgotten later, but if you want to take a trip far off the beaten path, you might have trouble finding the things you didn't bring. Start out with all the supplies you need, and you won't have to worry about where to find the nearest convenience store or grocery store.

Know Your Destination
Part of the joy of the RV lifestyle is the freedom to go where you want, but you might miss out on some opportunities if you don't do a little planning first. Do some research on campgrounds and attractions at your destination.

Trying to find RV hookups during the summer travel season can be challenging. It's best to reserve space ahead of time so that you know you'll have a place to stop. If there are certain attractions that you want to visit, be sure that they have parking available for RV camping. Check the locations of gas stations, too; once you get away from the highway, you may find that gas stations are scarce.
