How to Change a Bike Tire
Knowing how to change a bike tire can help you out whether you’re cycling recreationally or in the midst of a triathlon. In fact, being able to change your own bike tire quickly can make a huge difference in your time if you’re a competitive cyclist. Here are some tips to help you learn how to change a bike tire.
First you’ll need a new tire. If you’re just out for a leisurely ride, this may not be at the top of your list of things to remember to pack, but it’s important. You can buy a backup tire from a bike shop, but there are other options. Check out a bike tire sale or a sporting goods swap meet, which some churches and YMCAs host yearly. Having a backup tire before you need it is always convenient.
Now, remove the bicycle wheel from the frame and let the air out (if it’s not already completely flat). You’ll need to separate the tire from the rim. You can use a tire lever to do this, or you can do it with your fingers. If there’s something still in your old tire, remove it. Make sure you save your old tire if it can be patched and reused!
Now take your new tire and push it onto the rim. Run your fingers along the edges to make sure that the tire is properly on the rim. Now inflate your new tire, using a bike pump (this is another good thing to have on hand, especially during a race).
Your new tire should be ready to go. Do a final check to make sure that everything is as it should be before you ride on it.
