What to Wear Running Long Distance?

By: Maeve Rich

Knowing what to wear running long distance is important. Having the right running gear is an essential part of enjoying trail running. Trail running is a great alternative to running on the road, for a multitude of reasons. It allows runners to be surrounded by nature. It distracts those pushing themselves from the physical pain they're in. It's easier on the knees. Proper attire and footwear can enhance your experience and prevent injury. Here's what you'll need for trail running.

Trail Running Shoes
Trail running shoes are lightweight yet provide protection against the obstacles you may encounter while trail running (think rocks and unexpected holes in the ground). Try on a lot of running shoes to find a pair that is comfortable and also provides you with support. If you plan on racing, you may want to pick up a pair of flats, which are very lightweight running shoes that allow your feet to move faster. Keep in mind these are not for distance runs and they take some getting used to.

Socks
Stay away from cotton socks when buying running gear. Sure, they're cheap and you probably have a load of them in your sock drawer, but cotton doesn't dry easily. Wet socks equal uncomfortable feet that have a high risk of getting blisters. Wool and synthetic socks are the way to go when trail running.

Clothing
As with your socks, avoid cotton for trail running. If you get wet you can end up cold and uncomfortable. Shirts and shorts or pants made of moisture wicking material will keep both water and sweat off of your body. If it is raining or cold, you'll need a jacket as well. Trail running jackets are known as shells, and they can be anywhere from lightweight to moderately thick (but remember your body temperature will rise as you run). Shells are important running gear because they keep you dry and protect you from the wind.

Accessories
A hat will keep your body heat where you want it to be-in your body. At the same time, your hat should allow air to circulate, that way you don't overheat. Look for a hat which has side vents. This will provide the perfect mixture of warmth and air flow. In cold weather you'll also want to keep your hands warm and dry. Don't use any old pair of mittens, which could leave your hands cold and wet. Opt for a pair of running gloves for optimum comfort. Sunglasses will keep the sun out of your eyes. Make sure you get a watch as well. Not only will you always know what time it is, a high-quality watch for running will keep track of your heart rate, splits, speed, distance among other things. If you're training for a race, this is pretty much a necessity.

Fuel Belt
If you plan on running for more than an hour or greater than ten miles, you'll need to be able to rehydrate. A fuel belt or hydration pack is an easy way to keep water on your person without tying up your hands. Fuel belts are small water bottles attached to a belt at your waist. A hydration pack is a lightweight backpack which stores water. Try on each to see what feels the most comfortable for you. Having the right running gear can make you a more successful trail runner.
