The transition is the part of the race where you change your clothing and equipment between the swimming and cycling segment (transition area 1 or T1) and the cycling and running portions of the race (T2). Since your transition time is included in your overall triathlon time, it's important to make sure you're as quick as possible during transition. That means keeping what you need to a bare minimum. Stay away from fancy triathlon gear unless it will definitely help your performance and you've practiced putting it on and taking it off repeatedly.
Swim to Bike Triathlon Transition
The longer the swimming part of your triathlon is, the more tired your legs are going to be when you come out of the water. One way to combat this and avoid rubber legs is to kick more gently during the last leg of your swim. This allows blood to flow into your legs and prepares you for solid ground.
As you're running to your bike, reach around back and unzip your wetsuit, if you're wearing one. This will speed up your triathlon transition time. Take your arms out of it and have it around your waist as you reach your bike. At the bike rack, take your wetsuit off, one leg at a time, pushing rather than tugging it off.
Your bike shoes should already be clipped into the pedals, if you're using a triathlon bike. Socks are not necessary at this point, but make sure you've cycled without socks before trying it during the race. These simple steps can speed up your triathlon transition times.
If this is a sprint triathlon or your first tri and you're just trying to get a feel for the event rather than win it, it's perfectly okay to put on your running sneakers for the cycling and running portions of the triathlon. Your performance may not be as good as if you had a (very expensive) triathlon bicycle and cycling shoes, but you should be sure you're into triathlons before shelling out for the specialized gear.
As you leave the bike rack, you'll run to the area where you can mount your bicycle. At the point where you can get on your bicycle, jump onto your bike seat, landing on your leg near your butt rather than your private parts. If you are a man especially, this will hurt a great deal.
Bike to Run Triathlon Transition
Coast into the dismount area, preparing to get off your bike. If you have Velcro shoes, undo them as you get near. If you have laces, this is unadvisable, as your laces can get caught in the bike.
If you're racing to win, you can take your shoes off when you're almost at the triathlon transition area. Be careful not to let your feet get caught in the equipment.
Swing your right leg over to the right side of your bike as you cross the line. Grab the front of your bicycle and run with it to your transition spot. Have your clothing and/or sneakers ready to go.
