How to Make a Ping Pong Table

Here's what you need to know to learn how to make a ping pong table. Doing it yourself can save you a bundle over buying a table at the store.

The first thing you'll need to do is determine the size of your ping pong table. A regulation size ping pong table measures nine feet long, five feet wide and is two and a half feet off the ground. A six inch net stretches across the middle of the ping pong table. You may alter these dimensions to suit your needs, but it's a good idea to keep the length and width proportionate. Also make sure you take into account extra room for moving around while playing and any backswing you may take.

Next, you should decide what material you will use. Many ping pong tables are made of Masonite, but you can use any material which will be flat and smooth. Another good and affordable option is simple plywood. Again, regulations state that a ball, when dropped from a foot above the ping pong table, should bounce 8 ¾ inches.

You may wish to either purchase or download free plans to design your ping pong table. Starting with the legs is a good idea, and it will give you a sense of accomplishment early on. Once the legs are complete, make the frame. Then you'll make the ping pong table top and secure that to the frame using wood glue and clamps.

Once the table itself has been built, paint the ping pong table top. Green is the standard color for ping pong tables, but feel free to get creative. When that has dried, paint the white lines on the ping pong table. You can purchase a net at just about any sporting goods store.

When your table is completely dry, try it out! It's a good idea to make sure the ping pong table is sturdy while you still have your tools and materials out. Enjoy.
