How to Build a Skateboard Deck from Scratch

By: Maeve Rich

Learning how to build a skateboard deck from scratch takes patience as well as the ability to work with wood. It also requires access to some machinery such as a wood press and a mold. However, if you're up to the challenge, building your own standard or longboard skateboard can be quite rewarding.

The first thing you'll have to do is assemble all of your materials. Plywood is the most important of these materials. Try to acquire several types and thicknesses of plywood so that you can build a sturdy skateboard deck. You'll also need wood glue, molds, a press, sealant, grip tape and hardware. If you don't own molds and a press, try to borrow them from someone.

You should determine what size skateboard deck you want before you start building. Try different sizes out if you can so that you know you're comfortable with what you choose.

Secure the wood together using the wood glue. Next you'll need to shape the sealed wood, called a veneer, using the skateboard mold.

Now you'll have to press the skateboard deck using a cold press. Allow the deck to sit in the press for long period of time so that everything can set. This stage requires quite a bit of patience.

Shape the veneer. You can use an old skateboard deck as a model for the shape you want your new skateboard deck to be. Sand the edges of the skateboard deck until they are smooth.

Your next step is to drill holes into the skateboard deck for the hardware. Use a pencil to mark where you're going to drill so that you don't make a mistake.

Seal the skateboard deck to protect it from water. Use two layers to make sure that the skateboard deck is water resistant. Finally, attach the hardware and try the skateboard out.

Choosing a skateboard is a question of balancing flexibility, durability and control with the weight of the board itself. Street skaters should look for small, lightweight boards while cruisers will get more stability from larger, heavier boards.

Perhaps you've seen somebody riding an electric skateboard, cruising down the street without having to use precious energy to propel themselves. You may not even notice that it is electric, as they look quite similar to a standard skateboard, save the battery pack attached to the bottom of the deck.
