These high school wrestling rules have been developed to protect wrestlers as well as to govern the sport. Most high schools follow the collegiate rules, but others follow the Greco-Roman or Olympic freestyle rules.
Under collegiate rules, a match lasts three periods. The point of the wrestling match is to get your opponent on his back for a minimum of two seconds. This is known as pinning and constitutes a win.
Ties are determined by the wrestler who has scored the most points during the match.
Scoring points during a wrestling match can happen in different ways. These include:
Takedown - A takedown involves getting your opponent to the mat and will score you two points.
Escape - This, as the name suggests, involves getting away from your opponent. You get one point for an escape.
Near Fall - A near fall is when you almost pin your opponent and both of their shoulders are held within four inches of the mat for a minimum of two seconds or if one shoulder is touching the mat and the other is at a 45 degree angle. Near falls also come when you trap your opponent in a high bridge. A near fall is worth two to three points.
Reversal - When your opponent has control of you on the mat and you manage to reverse positions and obtain control of your opponent, you get two points.
It is also possible for your opponent to score points because of infractions that you commit. If you illegally hold your opponent, she can score between one and two points. Other infractions include technical violations such as going off the mat or pushing your opponent off the mat so as to stop wrestling. Similarly, you may not leave the match without first asking permission from the referee. It is against the rules to lock or overlap your hands when in control of your opponent. You also may not grab your opponent's clothing or headgear.
The collegiate rules are similar to high school wrestling rules in that they also try to keep matches as polite as possible. Unnecessary roughness can lead to your opponent being awarded one to two points as can unsportsmanlike conduct, stalling or false starts. Flagrant misconduct can cause the match to be ended immediately. If you are charged with flagrant misconduct and are ejected, you automatically lose and cost your team three points.
