If you're unsure how to play capture the flag, don't worry. It's a simple game. Use this overview to learn the basic strategies of the game.
How to Play Capture the Flag
- Find two items that will work for flags. Scrap material or old shirts work, especially if they have bright colors.
- Wear dark or camouflage clothing, if possible, since it will be more difficult for others to see you.
- Break into teams. Teams of three or more work best. For a large number of players, divide into three teams trying to capture three flags.
How to Play Capture the Flag - The Teams
- Divide the playing field into territories.
- Place one flag at the back of each team's territory. Some versions of the game have the flag placed in an obvious spot at eye level. Other adaptations hide the flag so it is visible only from one angle. The flag cannot be moved once it's hidden.
- Guarding the flag is not allowed.
- Determine what to do with captured players. Players can either sit out during the remainder of the game, be placed in a jail with the opportunity for rescue, or switch teams.
- Split into two groups on a team: attackers and defenders. These positions can alternate as needed.
- Try to sneak across the border to find and capture the enemy flag without being caught.
- Conceal the flag or hide by the border to seize the opposition if you are a defender.
- Tag enemy players only if they are on your side of the border. Captured players are not able to give directions to their team members.
Win by carrying the captured enemy flag across the border to your team's side. Throwing the flag across the border to avoid being tagged does not constitute winning when you know how to play capture the flag properly.
