How to Play Soccer

By: Maeve Rich

Learn how to play soccer, the most popular sport in the world. It is rapidly gaining favor in the US. Soccer goals are exciting and give players and spectators alike an adrenaline rush, which is propelling people to pick up the sport. Soccer training camps and groups are popping up all over the place, in addition to the fact that more kids in the US are playing soccer now than ever before. If you want to learn how to play soccer, here are some tips.

Get Some Soccer Equipment
Obviously you'll need a soccer ball. The size will depend on your age, so go to your local sporting goods store and ask for help. Shin guards are a good idea and are required by most organized leagues. If you'll be playing indoor soccer, indoor soccer shoes will provide traction that you can't get from regular sneakers. For outdoor soccer, you might want to invest in a comfortable pair of cleats. These will also provide you with traction, which can be especially helpful on a rainy day or when the grass is wet.

Learn the Basics
You'll need to learn how to kick the ball, both for passing purposes as well as to score a goal. Sometimes you'll want the ball to travel as quickly as possible from your foot to a teammate; other times you'll want it to soar over a goalie's head. There are different ways to kick the ball, including using the side of your foot and using the front, where your laces are. Have somebody, such as a soccer coach or an experienced soccer player, show you the difference.

Learn the Rules
You'll need to know the rules of soccer, especially if you are going to play on a team. Knowing how to throw the ball in without getting penalized and what it means to get a yellow or red card are all important. Different leagues have different rules, so get familiar with yours before you play.

Practice
Practice makes perfect. You'll probably enjoy playing soccer so much that this won't be a problem, but it's good to keep in mind that the more you play, the better you'll get. Never stop learning how to play soccer; you can always try to work on a new skill to improve.
