Elderhostel Travel: Learning Adventures for the Over 55 Crowd

The Elderhostel is the most unique travel organization I've ever come across offering outstanding opportunities for learning while traveling; not to mention meet new friends during your journey. My parents have been on numerous Elderhostel trips and have had great vacations with them.

The Elderhostel is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing extraordinary learning adventures for people 55 and over. From New Hampshire to New Zealand, South Africa to South Dakota, Elderhostel offers you a world of educational opportunities - at exceptional values. Their tagline reads: "The world is our classroom. What do you want to learn?" There are over 10,000 programs sponsored by the Elderhostel every year! Some topics include:

  • National Parks
  • Houses and Gardens
  • Signature Cities
  • Food and Wine
  • Active Outdoor
  • Architecture
  • Marine Research
  • Ancient Histories

Regardless if you travel domestically or internationally, the Elderhostel promises "educational excellence, comfortable accommodations and delicious meals, extraordinary value, and warm camaraderie of fellow Elderhostelers."

They have been running educational travel programs for over 25 years.

From personal experience, I'm here to tell you that I'm a bit jealous of the stories my parents share upon return from their wonderful adventures domestically and internationally. Depending on where you live, there is even a commuter program so you can learn all day and sleep in your own bed at night.

The Elder Hostel now offers a catalog specific to North America if you prefer to stay in North America entitled "United States and Canada."

Adventure travel vacations invite tourists to actively explore the history, culture, landscape and wildlife at their destination, including activities like touring ancient ruins in Mexico, salmon fishing in Alaska or taking a cruise on the Black Sea.

A new breed of tourism is emerging. Rather than simply whiling away the hours, lounging at the beach with a frothy drink in hand; travelers are showing a renewed sense of spirit and adventure. In a concerted effort to expand their horizons, increasing numbers of vacationers are booking trips which have the ability to transcend them beyond their every-day visceral and physical existences.
