The Mount Auburn Cemetery is a temporary retreat from the urban bustle into a world of trees, birds, rabbits and statuary. It sounds like a headline from today's newspaper: "Armed Groups Clash; Twelve Killed in Arlington House." It really did happen, but it's not today's news. In Salem, New Hampshire, visit a place called "America's Stonehenge." Named after the famous circle of standing stones on Salisbury Plain in England, the formations found at the top of Salem's Mystery Hill have an origin that has been lost over the passing centuries, and the explanations that have been offered for them are similar to those bruited about for the stones in England: an astronomical observatory, a religious site, even a location for human sacrifice. What's the truth? We certainly don't know, but a visit to see this mysterious place is one way to draw one's own conclusions! By Michael O'Hearn |
