Essential Road Trip Snacks

By: Lisa Bower

Not only do you need to make sure you have road trip directions to your final destination, but you also want to keep your passengers as happy as possible with some road trip snacks and treats along the way. This will not only save you money and time because you won't have to stop and pay for food, but it can be a great way to remain healthy along the way.

Make sure to pack plenty of pre-prepared foods and accessories to create quick meals. When you're driving, snacks can help keep your spirits up and remain focused on the road. If you're driving a long distance, it will save you money to make some sandwiches for the road.

You want your snacks to be easy to eat. You also do not want anything that is going to make your hands especially sticky. Choose foods that will fill you up, but won't distract you when you're trying to drive. Try sliced vegetables or fruits like carrots, apples and grapes, and basic snacks like pretzels, almonds and soy nuts. These are healthy, delicious and easy to eat.

If you are going to be eating a more substantial meal in the car, make sure it doesn't need to be warmed up. Sandwiches and burritos are two of the best meals to bring on the road: they are easy to make, easy to eat and do not require a microwave.

Always stock your car with beverages. You do not want to get dehydrated if you are driving long distances. The best way to keep yourself hydrated and happy is to have a cooler of drinks. You should have enough water to last a full day (in case your car breaks down) and some juice to add a nutritional boost throughout the day. If you're worried about driving for a long distance, pack an assortment of energy drinks.
