Planning a Road Trip with Kids

By: Lisa Bower

When planning a road trip, you want to consider everything from your road trip route to your destination to the snacks you bring along for the ride. If you are planning a road trip with kids, you will need to make some additional considerations to ensure the journey is enjoyable for everyone.

Plan rest stops. Kids can handle road trips much better if a route is divided by several stops. The general rule is to stop at least every two hours. This way, the kids can use the bathroom, stretch their legs and run around to use some of their excess energy.

Bring entertainment. You want to be sure to have a diverse array of activities for your kids to use so that they do not become bored. Bring coloring books, simple crafts and board games. Consider bringing interactive games and music to play along the way. This way, your kids can focus on the fun they are having and will not continually ask you how much longer they have in the car.

Bring along snacks. Quick and easy snacks help keep the kids content and happy. Healthy snacks will not only fill their appetite, but will stop the kids from getting too tired or grumpy during the course of the trip. Additionally, be sure to bring enough water to keep your kids hydrated.

Plan for emergencies. First Aid kits are essential in case someone gets hurt while traveling. Make sure you have aspirin, anti-nausea medication and stomach relief tablets in case someone gets sick from car travel. Also be sure to stock your car emergency kit with roadside flares and your spare tire in case your car breaks down.
