Traveling by Train

By: Diane Quinn

With gas prices fluctuating, more people are discovering the wonders of traveling by train in America. Railroads held an important role in our nation's history, and choosing trains today continues to charm and surprise those who take the extra time to travel this way. Not only is this a fantastic way to view the country without the hassles of driving, but train travel is back in vogue because it is eco-friendly. The fact that trains rarely suffer from weather delays makes using them reliable and fun too.

Why choose train travel?

When you think about a trip, do you just hop in your car without realizing that trains service almost all large cities and most of America's vacation destinations, including the Grand Canyon? Instead of getting stuck in gridlock traffic, why not let yourself be pampered by helpful attendants. Not only will you sit back and enjoy the view, but if you have the time, train travel is less expensive than flying, and is much more comfortable and faster than traveling by bus.

Trains are one of the last means of luxury transportation left in America. Depending upon your budget, discounted rates are offered for students and seniors over age 62. Even tourists from other countries can find bargains with a variety of passes offered, if they prefer traveling by train to see America.

Traveling by train in comfort

America's premier passenger train is Amtrak, with spacious reclining seats, gleaming observation domes, air-conditioning and comfy bunks or sleeping cars. When you choose a train, you aren't choosing the fastest method of transportation, but you are choosing a civilized travel experience. Known as "hotels on wheels," long-distance train travel delivers you rested and relaxed at your destination. Your no-stress trip includes fine dining with a view, and sleeping to the gentle rocking of the train.

Uniformed attendants add to the Hollywood ambiance. Reclining seats are soft and comfortable, and leg-rests allow you to take an afternoon nap. You can even sleep through the night if you prefer not to pay extra for a cozy bedroom on a traditional sleeping car where there are sizes for singles or families traveling with children. This class of travel includes three meals in the dining car and complimentary beverages with a newspaper in the morning. There is always plenty of room to stretch or walk around when traveling by train.

Sociable train travel

Because train travel creates a relaxed environment to unwind, people are more inclined to reach out and socialize with each other and make new friends. Train travel is perfect for sightseeing while sharing the adventure with the people around you. A shared travel experience is always an enriched experience.
