How to Find a Travel Agent

By: Veronica Shine

It's not difficult to find a travel agent if you need some help planning your next getaway. A travel agent is a professional with experience and has direct access to travel suppliers. They can offer comprehensive tours, cruises, hotels, car rentals, airline tickets and more. The choices for a holiday are unlimited with a travel agent.

Isn't Using the Internet Easier?
Even though the Internet allows you to make your own arrangements, there are times when a travel agent is almost a necessity. If you are an inexperienced traveler, do not have the time to handle documentation, are not sure of travel restrictions or have special circumstances like planning a trip with a large group, then using an agent is beneficial to you.

Aren't All Travel Agents the Same?
Travel agents can be diversified and specialize in certain travel categories. Some agents may handle all types of travel requirements, while others may specialize in specific areas. For instance, an agent can be strictly a cruise travel agent, an adventure travel agent or even a Disney travel agent. Disney travel agents must go through the Disney College of Knowledge and are re-certified and tested each year on all of the Disney Parks throughout the world, as well as Disney Cruises.

You can also choose to use an online travel agent. This works well if your time is too limited to sit down at an agency. Many offer discounted packages because of their low overhead. And you can chat directly with them online and print your documents in a no fuss environment.

How Do I Find a Travel Agent?
Before dealing with just any agent, make sure they are certified. A certified travel agent is a member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA).  The ASTA is the world's largest association with over 20,000 members. You can search the ASTA website to find an accredited agent and agency in your neighborhood.

Check the newspaper for specials and call the certified agents to interview them over the phone or stop in person for the details.

Once you have obtained an agent and purchased your travel arrangements, your relationship with your travel agents does not end there. A good travel agent will check on you when you return to assure your satisfaction. They can also help you resolve any problems that may have occured on your vacation and negotiate on your behalf.
