Good Will Traveling: Altourism Enhances Summer Vacation Plans

By: Amber Hilton

For most people, a vacation is a time to unwind and maybe take in some new sights and sounds. However, it's possible to enjoy a vacation while also helping others, something that is known as good-will traveling, voluntourism or "altourism" (a clever term that blends altruism with tourism). For those with an altruistic streak, this type of vacation might be just the ticket. The rewards include the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from helping others. In many cases, the rewards also include a less expensive vacation.

Almost anyone can enjoy good-will traveling, but an altruistic summer vacation can be especially beneficial for young adults as an opportunity to gain perspective and build character. Altourism is also increasingly popular among seniors who are retired. Altourism is possible both in the United States and abroad through a number of organizations, such as Global Volunteers, Projects Abroad and Earthwatch Institute. You'll spend much of your time working on various volunteer projects, but you'll also have some time to get out and explore and enjoy yourself.

Some programs allow travelers to volunteer as teachers or orphanage workers, but opportunities also exist to build homes for the impoverished. Some programs also allow volunteers to help with conservation projects and other environmental efforts. In many cases, the tasks are tailored to volunteers' specific career skills.

Altourism isn't generally what most would consider a bargain, but it's typically cheaper than the average vacation, especially an overseas vacation. Often, certain costs, such as lodging and meals, are built into the cost of the vacation. In addition, the cost of the trip (or portions of it) can often be tax deductible as an out-of-pocket charitable donation. (Check with your tax professional for details.) Of course, most people aren't attracted to altourism just for the tax break, but saving a little money while you help others doesn't hurt.
