Guide to Body Surfing

Body surfing is an activity enjoyed by all types of people. Little kids spend hours body surfing at the local beach. Adults body surf on vacation, diving into the waves and riding them back to shore. Body surfing can be both enjoyable and dangerous. That's why it's important to follow a few simple guidelines for body surfing.

Before you attempt to go body surfing on the beach, make sure that you're an excellent swimmer. Whenever you go body surfing you're putting yourself at risk of an undertow or fatigue. You'll have to be able to handle yourself in an emergency situation.

The first thing you should do when you're body surfing is to swim out to where the waves break. You don't want to go out too far where the water will be flat, and at the same time, you need to make sure that you're past the rocks and shallow water. If you're in the white water,

As you see the wave coming, start swimming toward shore. If you don't catch the wave within a few strokes, you should wait for the next one. Remember to be patient. It really pays on the beach and in life.

Once you've caught a wave, arch your back and kick your legs. Let the wave take you and enjoy the ride. Make sure that you're careful as you reach shallow water. You want to be in control of your body as you approach shallow ground. If the wave has control of you, you could be at risk of seriously injuring yourself if you hit your head or neck on the ground or losing  your wetsuit.

Never go body surfing alone. It's a good idea to have somebody either with you in the water or on the beach that will be able to call for help.
