What Do I Need to Build a Computer?

By: Dachary Carey

Wondering "what do I need to build a computer?" Building a computer is cheaper than ever, as the cost of computer parts has come down significantly in the past few years. If you want a machine done your way, build your own computer.

Basic PC Hardware: So, what do I need to build a computer? You need a few basic parts at the minimum: motherboard, processor, video card, hard drive, RAM, case, power supply, fans and CD-ROM or DVD drives. PC hardware has come down significantly in price, and you can get some great deals at reputable online retailers, such as Newegg.

Depending on your needs, you may still wonder "what do I need to build a computer"? You will want a sound card, wireless network card, USB card or FireWire card. Extra fans are always a good idea, especially for powerful systems. You can get barebones kits from some retailers, which come with the basic parts to start a computer, and then you can add whatever you like for additional components.

Monitor: If you're building your own computer, you won't get an all-inclusive kit that comes with everything you need, and you'll need to buy a monitor separately. Consider available space when determining the size of the monitor. Like computer parts, monitors have come down significantly in price, so you can get a good flat-screen LCD monitor for under $200 these days, or a great one for under $300.

Computer Speakers: Most monitors today don't include built-in computer speakers, so you'll need to buy those separately. You can get a set of inexpensive computer speakers for under $20, but the quality is low on these cheap speakers. If you plan to listen to music or do immersive gaming with high-end sound, invest in a better pair of stereo speakers for approximately $50, or a computer surround-sound system for $150 and up.

Keyboard And Mouse: You have the flexibility to choose anything you like, so don't get one of the cheap $10 keyboards that come packaged with a store-bought system. If you spend a lot of time on the computer, choose an ergonomic keyboard that can save you from a massive case of Carpal Tunnel down the road. Gamers may prefer a custom gaming keyboard with programmable macros and hotkeys. If you've ever spilled a soda on a keyboard, maybe you'd prefer the peace of mind of a spill-resistant keyboard. Get the keyboard and mouse combo that works best for your needs, and live a little; spend some of that money you're saving by building the system yourself.

Additional Accessories: That covers the basics, but, if you're building a custom system, you may want to add accessories. Maybe it's time to update that old inkjet printer. Perhaps you're replacing a system that died, and you want to invest in a backup system. You're saving money by building a custom system, so consider adding accessories that would enhance your computer use.
