Buying a Laptop for Your Family

By: Todd Pheifer

The laptop computer continues to be a popular piece of consumer electronics, and many families will think about purchasing a laptop for household needs, such as schoolwork, finances, entertainment and general Internet searches. Today, there are many different laptops on the market, which means that families should consider a number of factors before making a purchase. If you're thinking of buying a laptop for your family, take a look at these issues.

Budget constraints

Before getting too excited about various laptop features, it is usually wise to establish a budget. If people get excited about certain hardware before setting a price range, they may make a poor financial decision in order to satisfy their material wants. Granted, a certain amount of research should be done in order to understand the general range of prices. However, most families should have an amount in mind before they do serious shopping.

Functionality and needs

Buying a laptop should be an expression of family needs. In other words, what is the computer going to be used for on a regular basis? Sometimes individuals get caught up in the maximum potential of a computer rather than the reality of consumer behavior. Most families do not get much beyond word processing, Internet searches, and some media viewing. Extra features may be nice, but families should be careful that they do not overspend for functions they will never use.

Dividing up the time

Another consideration before buying a laptop is time allocation. If the laptop is going to be a "family" laptop, parents may want to establish some ground rules for dividing usage time each day or week. In addition, savvy parents will come up with guidelines about child usage, so that young people do not get into a situation where they are viewing inappropriate material online.

Durability and location

Because laptop computers are portable, it is not uncommon to transport them around the home and also take them on the road. Families should determine if the laptop will have a standard location, or if it will "travel" around the house as needed. This is a key factor because families want their laptop to maintain durability, so that the hardware life can be as long as possible.
