Getting a Printer Ink Refill for Less

By: Dachary Carey

You've seen printer ink refill kits. You've probably also seen generic versions of your manufacturer's specific print cartridges at anywhere from 25 to 50% of the cost. Many consumers decline these options because of questions about quality and functionality; you know the manufacturer's ink cartridges will work, so is it worth trying a generic that may turn out to be a waste of money?

Generic Ink Cartridges
What many people don't realize about generic ink cartridges is that they are typically the manufacturer's original ink cartridges, refilled and refurbished at a third-party factory. Because they often use the manufacturer's own equipment, there is very little question about whether or not the ink cartridge will fit and function in your printer. The true test of a generic is whether or not the prints look good. Some discount ink cartridge companies use good-quality replacement ink, similar to the manufacturer's own ink cartridges. Others aren't as focused on quality, relying on buyers' desire for a good deal to supersede any quality complaints.

If you're considering a generic ink cartridge, do a quick Web search for your printer model and the words "generic ink cartridge" and "generic ink cartridge problems" to see if there are any known issues with generics for your model. Some printer models have known issues with generic ink cartridges, and if yours falls into that category, it's a good idea to pay the full price for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) products. If your printer has known issues, try to find a discounted OEM from a reputable supplier.

Printer Ink Refill Kits
Refill kits are even less expensive than generic ink cartridge replacements, so they can be very tempting if you go through a lot of printer ink or just want to save a few bucks when the time comes to replace your cartridge. Refilling an ink cartridge is not for the faint of heart, however. It involves a lot of patience and willingness to get messy. Most refill kits come with a syringe and ink for refilling the cartridge, and require you to use newspapers and gloves to avoid messy stains in the event of a spill. If you'd prefer not to go through the hassle, buy a new cartridge instead.

If you do want to use a refill kit, keep in mind that they don't work well with all printers. Do a Web search for your printer model and the words "ink cartridge refill kits" or "ink cartridge refill problems" to see if your printer has known issues. Some refill kit sellers provide low-quality ink that may not dry quickly enough, may fade over time or could even clog up your printer. Do a Web search on your specific refill kit seller to ensure you're dealing with a quality distributor.
