Computer Security Tools: What Does Your Network Require?

By: Gail Seymour

Wondering which computer security tools your network requires? It's easy to think only of Internet security: protecting your network from outside threats. Yes, your network needs-at a minimum-a hardware firewall/router, antivirus software and regular software updates and patches. But it also needs physical security and safeguards against unauthorized access.

Password protocol

Good computer security begins with the basics. Ensure computers are accessible only to registered users with password-protected accounts. Set user privileges no higher than the user needs. That way, children or unauthorized staff can't install unwanted programs.

Features that save time can end up thwarting your computer security tools. Even on a home network, users never should store details about usernames and passwords for online accounts in unencrypted files. This is especially true for bank accounts and other sensitive information. Turn off auto-complete and password-saving functions in Internet browsers. Instead, use a service such as Roboform to secure user details. TrueCrypt, another option, will encrypt files on your computer in real time.

Secure your wireless network with WPA encryption. Switch off Service Set IDentifier (SSID) broadcasting so that neighbors won't know about your network. Have devices access the network by MAC addresses rather than IP addresses, if possible. Then, only computers and other devices you choose can connect to your network.

Computer security tools to install

Secure your network from unwanted Internet access by installing a hardware firewall between your router and workstations. This is a good idea even if your router has a built in firewall.

Install antivirus software as well as a comprehensive Internet security suite, such as those offered by Symantec (Norton Internet Security), McAfee, Kapersky Labs and Avast. These combine antivirus software with antispam filters, software firewalls and other computer security tools. Password-protect these programs to prevent unauthorized users from changing settings.

Wherever possible on your network, set your operating system and installed programs to check for updates and to download them automatically. Ensure your browser is always up to date. If you want to determine whether your software has any known vulnerabilities and whether these have been patched, use the Secunia Advisory and Vulnerability Database.

It's not always easy to know what computer security tools your network requires. But investigating all the options, and taking advantage of as many as possible, can allow you to be safe rather than sorry.
