How to Get a Job in Computer Animation

By: Mark Mays

Getting a job in computer animation is no easy task. While demand for animators has grown slightly, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer animation is a somewhat volatile and highly competitive field that requires a high level of skill, training and experience. Some of the training you'll need will be in artistic fields to spark your creativity. You can either learn the skills on your own or get an advanced degree. Following are some ideas on how to get a job in computer animation.

The job market

Though the industry has a high profile thanks to film, television and video games, the work can be infrequent as it is project-oriented and many businesses don't stay open for long. Working as an independent contractor may be your best bet.

If you are only interested in a career in animation, you should prepare to move to one of the centers of the entertainment industry, like New York or Los Angeles. Many animation studios are located in these areas.

There will be work in other parts of the country, of course. Your local news station might need new motion graphics for its evening news program, or a local retailer may want a flashy commercial. Still, the greatest mass of job opportunities will be on the coasts.

Getting educated

You'll need training. First, consider a two- or four-year degree in computer animation or graphics. A four-year degree will help you pick up skills outside of computer animation that can assist you in your quest, like art, graphic design, writing and film studies. A two-year degree is a quicker path to getting into the workplace.

At either type of institution, you'll be able to reap one of the best benefits: networking contacts. If your instructors don't know people working in the industry, they'll be able to introduce you to those who do.

Do your research on the various schools offering a computer animation degree. Focus on the faculty and the quality of the institution's computer lab. You'll be spending a lot of time there, and you want the school to have the most modern technology available.

Some animation professionals don't stop with a four-year degree, but go on to get a master's. Not only would this path increase your starting salary in the field, it would put you on the road to teach the craft of computer animation -- an extra option during times when the job market is weak.

The self-study path will require lots of time and money. You'll have to purchase your own study materials, software and hardware. You won't have the benefit of learning from a pro, but you will have the freedom to move at your own pace.

Finding the job

Once you're ready to enter the workforce, you'll need to have a good demo reel. This will be a short film or clip showcasing your best work. You will also need a portfolio of your sketches, drawings and paintings.

In general, your job search will be the same as any other. You'll need a good resume and some academic or business references at the ready. You'll need to take an inventory of your skills and abilities, and research the companies that are hiring and potentially a good match for you. You will need to network, in person and online, with others in the computer animation field.
