You want to install Windows XP, but you're not sure where to start. It seems so daunting, so complicated. It's actually quite easy to install Windows XP, even if you're not really computer savvy. Just follow these step-by-step instructions to install or reinstall Windows XP.
You'll need to have the Windows XP installation CD before you start. This may have come with your computer or you may have to get it straight from Microsoft. There are several ways to go about installing Windows XP, depending on your situation. This will presume you wish to do what's called a "clean install," meaning the new version of Windows XP will wipe out your old hard drive and install the new operating system. You'll want to backup your existing hard drive to an external hard drive before doing this.
Now you're ready to begin with the installation. To install Windows XP, put your Windows XP disc into your CD drive and restart your computer. A message will pop up on your screen which reads, "Press any key to boot from CD." This part is easy. Press any key.
Your computer will now take you to the Welcome to Setup screen, where you'll press "Enter." You must agree to the license terms to move on.
Now you have to decide how you want to partition Windows XP. The easiest way is to simply press enter and create one partition which will take up your entire hard drive. You do have other options though. You can create two partitions, one which stores your applications and the other which is for data only. This method preserves any data you may save to your second partition. You may create multiple partitions of any amount of space you like when you install Windows XP. To begin creating partitions, press C, then enter how large you'd like your first partition to be. Your computer screen will then show the partition you've created, followed by the amount of space it occupies. You may repeat to create multiple partitions.
Now, using the NTFS file system, format the C: drive. Windows will format C: and then restart. Again your computer will display the message "Press any key to boot from CD." This time, don't press anything. Your computer will take a few seconds and then will continue.
When you install Windows XP, you'll choose your region, language and fill in your personal information, including an Administrator password. You'll also need the product key from your disc.
The next series of questions will depend on your preferences and internet connection. Follow the instructions on the screen until you're ready to login and begin working!
