Why Do I Need Java?

By: Aaron Baer Harsha

"Why do I need Java?" is a common question for computer users. If you want to write or run Web-based programs, Java is an important language to know.

For computer users, Java is a programming code that translates what appears to be a meaningless strand of numbers and symbols into a language that users can understand. Without Java, computer users would be able to browse the Internet freely, but they wouldn't have access to certain Web sites that employ Java to make their browsers more interactive. The number of sites using Java in this way have decreased, as more sites use JavaScript and Flash, but Java still appears often on the Web.

For programmers, Java is a good fit for writing interactive programs for the following reasons:

It is compatible with almost any operating system. Since Java operates through a "virtual machine" within your computer, it doesn't matter if you have a Mac or a PC, it will almost undoubtedly run Java.

It is simple to use. One aspect of Java that made it so groundbreaking at the time it was introduced is that it is almost entirely object-oriented. Though there were other programming languages that operated predominately under this principle, Java took it to a new level. Being "object-oriented" means that the programming is based on the interaction between virtual objects that are constantly sending and receiving signals. So, unlike many of its predecessors, which operated under modular programming principles, Java programming focuses on data, not processes, making code easier to write.

It is secure. Because of the Virtual Machine that makes Java almost universally compatible, Java is one of the most secure programming languages. Since it operates within this machine, any errors that occur are self contained, and the effects are not felt on the rest of your computer.

It is free. Java can be downloaded free of charge, and there are numerous tutorials available online to help you along the way.
