Guide to Converting AVI Files to MPEG Files

converting avi files to mpeg

Converting AVI files to MPEG format is fairly common, as MPEG files can be played on more devices. But how and why would you go about doing this? Let’s take a look.

What is the difference between AVI and MPEG files?
AVI and MPEG files both refer to digital video formats. AVI files generally offer a better picture and sound quality. So why would anyone want to use MPEG encoding instead? While current AVI files may have an edge on MPEG in quality, MPEG files are more universally accepted by most video playback devices. Additionally, AVI files require the downloading of codecs, or programs that allow the video to be displayed. Unfortunately, once a file is saved as an AVI file, you can’t just change the extension to .mpg to convert it to an MPEG file.

How do I get started converting AVI files to MPEG?
In order to accomplish this, you’ll need to download video conversion software. Some software can be downloaded for free as freeware or as a trial version shareware. PC users can download a trial of the Abdio AVI Video Converter, which has the capability to convert AVI files to MPEG as well as many other video formats. Mac users can use a product called iVCD. This product is available for commercial download and can convert AVI files into multiple formats. It also has a free download trial offer available on its Web site.

Do not feel restricted to these products, as they are just examples. There are many more available for your choosing. Before you purchase or download anything, it’s a good idea to research the product and see what other users have to say about it.

What about other MPEG formats, like MPEG 2 and MPEG 4?
Be advised that MPEG is an old video format that has been generally phased out by MPEG 2 format, which in turn is being phased out by MPEG 4. It’s a good idea to check if the converter software that you decide on can change AVI files to any of these formats.

Once you decide that you’d like to carry your home video or your own creations with you or watch them on other devices, you’ll be glad that you know how to convert AVI files to MPEG.
