If you need to view PPS files, you must have the appropriate program for opening these files. Windows and other operating systems look at file extensions like .pps at the end of file names to know which program to use when opening the file. By far, the most common type of PPS file is a PowerPoint Slideshow file. These files are intended to be viewed rather than edited, in contrast to the more prevalent PPT files that PowerPoint also creates. However, a few other programs also use this file extension.
Potential PPS Programs
Obviously, Microsoft PowerPoint itself can open PPS files, but not everyone wants to fork out hundreds of dollars for an office suite that is not any more functional than affordable or even free options like OpenOffice. Most presentation software, including Apple's Keynote and OpenOffice Impress will open PPS files without a hitch. Even Web apps like Zoho Show will open these files so you can view them on any computer anywhere. If you do not want to use programs like OpenOffice, then you can also download Microsoft's free PowerPoint Viewer to view PPS files.
How To Open A PPS File In A Different Program
If a PPS file does not open when you double-click on it, try opening the program you want to use first and then accessing the PPS file from within that program. If that does not work, try one of the other options. For example, if the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer does not work, try opening the file online with Zoho Show. When multiple options do not work, it probably means there is something wrong with the file or maybe it was written for one of the other rare programs that use .pps as a file extension: ArcView, Personal Producer, or PingPlotter.
