American Film Institute's 100 Most Thrilling Movies

The American Film Institute (AFI) picked the 100 most thrilling American films from 1923 to 1999. AFI shows that Claude Rains and Harrison Ford each have 4 films in its top 100 listing. Claude Rains' films include Casablanca and Notorious. Two of Ford's films include Star Wars and my Ford favorite, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Although I found Body Heat to be a fabulous movie, I was surprised to find that AFI did as well.

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, starring Janet Leigh, is AFI's #1 winner. I've no doubt that the music for the infamous shower scene and Leigh's terrifying screams made it a top thriller. It's interesting that the revered Maltese Falcon is not in the top 25. It is #26. Casablanca is listed at #37. I am happy to report that quite a few of my favorites made the top 100 cut; Double Indemnity, Chinatown, Dial M For Murder, The Magnificent Seven, King Kong, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Body Heat, just to name a few. Below are 20 of the AFI's top 100.

Psycho
Jaws
The Exorcist
North By Northwest
The Silence Of the Lambs
Alien
The Birds
The French Connection
Rosemary's Baby
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Godfather
King Kong
Bonnie and Clyde
Rear Window
Deliverance
The Manchurian Candidate
