Advantages of a Cell Phone Signal Booster

By: Jaceson Maughan

A cell phone signal booster is a commercial device that is designed to strengthen a cell phone's ability to hold a signal. The result is fewer dropped calls, better quality and an extended phone range. While a signal booster for a cell phone may not cure all that's wrong with a weak signal, when used correctly and installed properly, it can make your cell phone more useable than it was before. Cellular phone signal boosters can cost anywhere from $50 to $225, depending on make and model.

In-House Boosters
A cell phone signal booster works by placing a device outdoors, where it can receive signals without interference. External cell phone boosters are generally mounted on the roof or high wall of a house or office. The antenna of the booster sends the signal to the amplifier, which then rebroadcasts the signal to an indoor antenna and on to your phone. When a call goes out from the phone, a signal is sent to the small interior antenna, which amplifies it and transmits it to the outside antenna. This is especially effective if you are living or working in the middle of a large building with no good access to a strong signal. A signal booster for cell phones can make a previously dead area usable for cell phones.

Mobile Boosters
The technology for mobile boosters works the same way as in-house boosters, but the big difference is that mobile boosters are designed to fit on a car, truck or RV. The exterior antenna fits on the car roof or on the window, where the antenna picks up the signal and feeds it into the car. Some of these units are even wireless, leaving you with a streamlined process instead of battling cords and cables.

Cheap Cell Phone Signal Booster
Many people are awed by a current product on the market known as a cell phone antenna booster, which is a simple card or sticker that fits under your cell phone's battery. Companies claim that the application of this device increases the antenna's strength in picking up and enhancing the signal. There are conflicting reports as to how well these work, so do your research and check out consumer reviews before you buy one. While some consumers have found an improvement in marginal service areas, claims that they'll work in elevators or subways generally don't hold true.
