The portable car GPS system has come along way in less than a decade. Using a navigation system once available only to the military, a portable car GPS system has an accuracy of less than 50 feet. Prices are quickly dropping and features that were only available on high-end models are becoming commonplace at lower price points.
A Laundry List Of GPS Features
- Turn-by-turn directions. Turn-by-turn GPS systems use a recorded voice to relay turn information as you drive, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. Many units have foreign language voices that come as standard or optional features. One company)even provides celebrity voices, including Kim Cattrall, Dennis Hopper and Mr. T!
- Screen size. Portable car GPS systems have screen sizes that vary from 2.5" to over 5". Smaller screens can make data entry difficult, while larger screens can create a bulky device that blocks a significant portion of the windshield.
- Routing options. Flexible routing includes the ability to re-route your trip around traffic, accidents and even tool roads. On some units, dedicated detour functions allow you to reroute your trip at the touch of a button.
- Mounting. Most portable car GPS systems use a large suction cup to attach a mounting arm to the windshield. The two types of mounting arms are rigid and flexible. While rigid arms might limit viewing, they tend not to vibrate as much as flexible arms.
- Premium services. Most major portable car GPS system manufacturers offer premium services like real-time traffic and weather. These subscription services can alert you to issues along your route and help provide alternative routing.
- Voice command. Voice activated systems allow you to keep your eyes on the road while directing the operation of your GPS unit. While the effectiveness of this feature varies by manufacturer, voice recognition software has been steadily improving.
- Bluetooth. Using a Bluetooth compatible cell phone, some GPS units can facilitate hands-free phone operation. The GPS system can dial, receive calls and even provide on-screen caller ID.
- Entertainment. From FM receivers to MP3 and iPod connections, many portable car GPS systems do double duty as navigation and entertainment systems. Some units even have the ability to double as video players to entertain the kids while you drive.
