Updating iPod touch

The AppleR iPod touchR is one of the world's most popular media players. The sleek touchscreen creates an attractive, intuitive interface, through which users can listen to music, watch videos, play games and access a host of other applications. Software for the iPod touch is regularly updated, providing new or improved capabilities, so it is important to understand how to keep up with the changes. Learn how to update the iPod touch here.

Updating software wirelessly

You can update the iPod touch software over a Wi-Fi connection, provided that you are installing iOS 5 or above.

  • Connect the iPod touch to a power supply. Some updates take a long time, so you want to ensure that the battery life doesn't run out.
  • Connect the iPod touch to a Wi-Fi network. Tap Settings, then Wi-Fi. Select a network from the list, enter the password and then Connect.
  • Go to Settings, then General, then Software Update. This will automatically check to see whether new versions of the software are available.
  • If an update is available, you can tap the Download button to install it. The length of time this process takes will vary according to the size of the software update.
  • When the update is complete, a box will appear confirming whether you want to install. Tap Install to continue.

The device will normally restart once complete, after which the software will be fully up to date.

Updating software via iTunes

You can also update the iPod touch software via the iTunesR app on your computer or laptop.

  • First, check that you are running the latest version of iTunes. You can download the latest version online.
  • Connect your iPod touch to the computer via the USB cable.
  • Open iTunes (if it does not open automatically) and select the iPod touch from the list of devices in the menu on the left-hand side.
  • Click the Check for Update link in the middle of the Summary pane on your screen.
  • If an update is available, iTunes will prompt you to download and install it. Do not disconnect the iPod touch until the process is complete.

Updating apps

Applications downloaded to your iPod Touch also frequently need updating, as manufacturers release new and improved versions. You can also complete this process wirelessly. Connect your iPod touch to a Wi-Fi source, and then tap the App store icon. Tap the Updates button at the bottom right-hand side of the screen. You can either install all available updates or one at a time. You will not normally need to restart the device, but you will be unable to use the updated apps until the process has been fully completed.
