With the rise of the MP3 player, tech manufacturing giant Logitech looked to cash in with a portable speaker of its own. With the ability to pump out sound waves from any device with an audio jack, the Logitech MM28 Portable Speaker undoubtedly appeals to a wide audience. But are the appeal and the relatively steep price worth it?
Speaker details
First things first: The MM28 is a portable speaker through and through. It's not trying to replace your home theater surround-sound, but rather give you options. At just 1.24 inches thick, the device is made for the get up and go. It's ideal for camping trips, long days out with friends or workout sessions where having a pair of headphones on your head just isn't ideal. The Logitech MM28 does its job relatively well. The sound quality is about average and gives you the sort of result you'd expect from portable speakers. Needless to say, there is a definite lack of oomph, so don't plan on rocking out to any tracks with a high amount of bass, because it doesn't come through at all.
A question of quality
The sound quality may be what you would expect from a portable sound device. But in terms of overall quality, the MM28 falls rather flat. The Logitech MM28 Portable Speaker has been discontinued and can only be bought online and refurbished. Considering this-and its price range of about $100.00 at a couple of online retailers-it's a rather poor deal. In essence, you are paying more for the portability and less for the actual quality. For the same price, you could pick up a pair of at-home speakers with a subwoofer and enjoy a much higher level of audio fidelity.
If you are just looking to get your hands on a portable speaker, you can't go wrong with the MM28-but don't expect anything other than mediocre results when playing your Van Halen collection.
