Article marketing is one of the most powerful ways to get a website on the first page of Google. There aren't many readily available programs for a budding webmaster to be able to build high-quality backlinks through self-promotion without Google deeming the process Black Hat SEO. Article marketing is one way to get a website to go viral, but if it isn't done properly, it could be a waste of time.
Whom to Join?
There are a lot of article submission sites available to join, but the best one is probably Ezine Articles. They host a page rank of 7, and the submitted article is likely to get syndicated. After that there are a myriad of different article sites to join that have decent page ranks and syndication programs. Some of these sites are topic specific, meaning they are geared towards technology, or business etc. Joining multiple article sites is a necessity to get a website listed on the first page of Google.
Syndication
Syndication happens when a website owner reads an article they like and wants to put it on their website because they think it will enhance the quality of their site or help their customers. Syndication is good for article marketing because the marketer is getting more bang for their buck. Instead of getting link juice from just the site that the article was initially submitted to, the writer will get link juice from multiple sites.
Nofollow / Dofollow
It is important to know the difference between nofollow and dofollow links within a site. A nofollow link will not give a website any link juice. Google does not follow the link back to the source, so it doesn't provide the website with any search ranking boost for the efforts of writing an article. Unless the article was paid for, article marketers should avoid nofollow sites. Nofollow sites can be identified with the Firefox plug-in NoDoFollow. The nofollow sites are highlighted in red while dofollow sites are highlighted in blue.
Anchor Text
Usually article submission sites will give the writer a section to put information leading back to their website. This is called a resource box, and it is where a link back to the website can be placed. It is best to place the link inside anchor text instead of a straight URL. While a straight URL will still give the website link juice, it won't help with improving the site's search ranking of specific keywords. An example of good anchor text would be if a site was based around the lottery, the anchor text should be "lottery."
