If you're having an XBOX 360 problem, you're not alone. Microsoft's XBOX 360 has its fair share of quirks, some of which can be fixed on the user end and some of which require shipping the unit off to Microsoft.
XBOX 360 Freezes
Many XBOX problems are related to overheating issues. If your XBOX 360 is freezing, but no error indicator is triggered, you've probably got an airflow issue. Luckily, overheating is fairly easy to correct.
First, clear the area around the XBOX. If you have things stacked on top of, next to, in front of or behind the XBOX, move them. The XBOX needs plenty of room to breathe. Make sure the XBOX 360 is free of dust, and air is moving smoothly through the air vents. If the XBOX is near a source of heat, such as a heating vent or other hot electronic device, move it. If it's in a confined area, such as an entertainment center, try putting it on the floor or on top of the entertainment center to see if that solves the problem.
Finally, check the power supply. The power brick itself can overheat. If the XBOX isn't obscured but you're still experiencing overheating problems, move the power brick to a clear area, or prop it up on a wire rack or similar device to promote airflow. Don't store the XBOX 360 or the power brick in a small cabinet or other confined area that retains heat, as you're likely to experience overheating problems. This series of fixes should clear up most overheating-related freezing problems.
Beware the Red Ring of Death
Probably the most universally feared XBOX 360 problem is the Red Ring of Death. If you've never encountered the RRoD, consider yourself lucky. If you do know what the Red Ring of Death entails, you'll know what a pain this particular XBOX problem presents.
The XBOX 360 includes a series of four LED lights around the power button. During normal operation, these LEDs light up green to indicate the controller connected for a specific player; i.e. if two controllers are connected, the LEDs for player one and player two light up green.
When the XBOX 360 has a hardware problem, these LEDs light up red to indicate an issue. Different configurations of LED lights indicate different issues. The most universally feared and annoying hardware issue is colloquially called the Red Ring of Death, which entails three of the LEDs flashing red.
The Red Ring of Death indicates a general hardware failure, which has been linked to overheating that causes a particular piece of hardware to melt and malfunction inside the XBOX. When three LEDs flash in this particular sequence, with the player one, three and four LEDs flashing red, the only solution is to send your XBOX 360 to Microsoft for service.
